Flood situation in Myanmar (Typhoon Yagi 2024)

           Myanmar faced severe flooding in both 2011 and 2015, each resulting in over 100 deaths. On top of that, Cyclone Nargis in 2008 resulted in 138,000 deaths or people reported missing. Presently, Myanmar faces devastating floods following Typhoon Yagi.

            According to the situation report from UNICEF, at least 69 townships in nine regions and states including Nay Pyi Taw, Kayah, Kayin, Magway, Mandalay, Mon, Eastern and Southern Shan have been impacted by the floods. Approximately 631,000 people have been affected. [i]

             As stated by the SAC, there are already 268 deaths and 88 missing people across the country. Moreover, approximately 120,000 animals were reported dead by the disaster while around 650,000ha of rice paddies and other crops had been destroyed by floods. [ii] According to DDM Myanmar, the damage reports indicate that over 159 office buildings, 1040 schools, 386 religious buildings, 86 road and bridge sections, 765 electric poles, 71 communication towers, 148 cattle, 523,499 agricultural areas, and 60 other infrastructure and public facilities were affected by the flood. [iii]

Humanitarian Sector  

International: India and South Korea have announced aid programs for Myanmar, where more than 200 people died due to flooding caused by Cyclone Yagi.

            The South Korean government stated that it would provide $13 million in humanitarian aid to Myanmar, through organizations such as ICRC, OCHA, UNDP, UNHCR, UNICEF and AHA Centre. Funds prioritize healthcare, food security and for other emergency cases, he added.

           The Indian government officials announced that the Operation Sadbhav program, which provides humanitarian aid to Myanmar, Vietnam, and Laos, was launched on September 15. It is reported that mattresses, drinking water, food supplies, and medicines were sent to Yangon, Myanmar by a naval ship. [v]

The World Food Programme will directly distribute and support monthly food supplies, including rice, fortified biscuits, and nutritional supplements, to approximately 500,000 flood-affected people.

Additionally, WFP teams are assessing the impact on agriculture, livelihoods, and food security in the flood-affected areas, according to today’s statement from the WFP. [vi]

Myanmar Government- A total of 438 relief camps were established across nine regions and states, with donors providing drinking water, food, and clothing. According to the military government, rescue operations were carried out for over 163,710 people and nearly 42,858 households. [vii]
