From 9 July to 16 July, a group of dedicated LGBTIQ+ activists, including a representative from Human Development Forum Foundation (HDFF) participated in the Activist Academy 2023 held in Tallinn, Estonia. The event was co-organized by International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer & Intersex Youth and Student Organization (IGLYO) and the Eurasian Coalition on Health, Rights, Gender and Sexual Diversity (ECOM). The program aimed to empower youth activists by honing their comprehensive skill set, including Workshop Design and Delivery, Public Speaking, Social Media Communication, and Advocacy Campaign through Expert Workshops and Team Work Presentations.

During the Academy, participants learned the theoretical and practical aspects of activism with the guidance of experienced tutors and mentors. For example, the workshop on communication skills equipped activists with the knowledge and techniques to create a compelling “Elevator Pitch” that effectively introduced their projects and organizations to potential supporters. Through engaging exercises and real-life scenarios, the activists learned to speak passionately and persuasively within a limited time.

Another unique aspect of the program was the Queer City Tour of Tallinn. It provided participants with a vivid understanding of the LGBTIQ+ community’s history and the unwavering efforts of local activists in combating homophobia within this city.

The Activist Academy went beyond just enhancing individual skills. It also fostered connections and friendships among the participants, who came from different countries with varying cultural contexts. By engaging with one another, the activists gained invaluable insights into the dynamics of the LGBTIQ+ movement and the importance of intersectionality when fighting for justice and equality.

HDFF would like to express gratitude to IGLYO for the hospitality and for organizing this event which enabled our representative to acquire essential tools to combat violence and discrimination against the LGBTIQ+ community. In solidarity with human rights defenders for gender equity, HDFF reaffirms its commitment to promoting a just world for all.
