Attacks move towards military and police targets

November saw a drop in the number of casualties from the past few months. 16 persons were reported as killed from the violence in the three southern border provinces while at least 45 persons were injured. More than half of the victims were found in Narathiwat province and victims were fairly equally distributed between military and civilian casualties. When comparing the professions of victims over the past year to 2012, a clear difference can be seen between the periods as military and police casualties have become increasingly frequent. Attacks increasingly target and attain military personnel, police or defense volunteers, leading to a general increase in the percentage of casualties from this group, as showed by the diagrams below.

2013 – More peaceful than 2012?

Reports have been emphasizing the decreased number of casualties in 2013, as compared to the previous year. But although there has been measurable decrease,  this is mainly due to the Hat Yai bombing of March 2012 where hundreds of people were injured, thus raising the annual average. (* Note that there are no figures for January and February 2012, as for December 2013)
